The volatile tech sell-off that has roiled markets so far this week helped spur record withdrawals from Cathie Wood’s Ark Invest funds, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
The ARK Innovation ETF, which invests in disruptive technology like electric vehicles and autonomous driving, saw outflows of $465 million on Monday. The ARK Genomic Revolution ETF and the ARK Next Generation Internet ETF were also hit with sizable investor withdrawals: $202 million and $119 million respectively.
Ark’s high-profile and concentrated bets in Tesla and Bitcoin traded more than 20% below their recent highs amid the decline.
Investors have grown wary of high-priced tech stocks and instead are bidding up cyclical stocks in the financial and energy sector in recent weeks thanks to a surge in interest rates and concerns about rising inflation.
But Wood is sticking with her high-growth strategy, evidenced by the recent trading activity of her Ark ETFs. This week, Wood’s team has been selling large cap tech names like Apple, Amazon, and Alphabet, putting the proceeds to work in more volatile names like Tesla, Spotify, and Twitter.
Wood also told Bloomberg on Tuesday that she viewed the recent correction in bitcoin as “healthy” and remains “very positive” on the cryptocurrency.
The flagship Ark Innovation ETF is down 10% so far this week, but up 12% year-to-date.
