  • Through October 28, if you have an American Express card you can participate in the company's "3 for All" referral promotion.
  • When you refer a friend to open an Amex card (using a personalized link found through your Amex account) and they're approved, you'll earn a bonus of 7,500 points — plus 3x more points or 3% more cash back on your spending for three months.
  • Any friend you refer can also earn a generous welcome bonus, and they can begin referring friends to earn 3x more points, too.
  • Make sure to read the terms and conditions of this promotion, and note that you may be limited in the cards you can receive a referral bonus for.

American Express offers some of the best rewards credit cards on the market today, including cards that earn cash back as well as options that earn points in the American Express Membership Rewards program.

If you have an Amex card and you're looking to earn more cash back or travel points, the card issuer's limited-time referral promotion could help you do just that — without any additional spending.

We're focused here on the rewards and perks that come with each card. These cards won't be worth it if you're paying interest or late fees. When using a credit card, it's important to pay your balance in full each month, make payments on time, and only spend what you can afford to pay.

Amex '3 for all' referral promotion details

Now through October 28, Amex is running a "3 for All' promotion where eligible cardmembers can refer a friend to open any Amex consumer or business card.

If your friend gets approved, you'll earn 3x more points (or 3% more cash back) on each dollar you spend with your Amex card for the next three months, plus 7,500 Membership Rewards points per referral (up to 55,000 total).

In the meantime, your friend can earn a generous welcome bonus on their card as well as ongoing rewards for each dollar they spend.

To send a referral, log into your Amex account online or through the app, and head to the Referrals page, where you'll be prompted to share your referral via email, social media, or by copying and pasting a personalized referral link.

Unlike many special credit card promotions, the fine print for the "3 for All" promotion mostly benefits consumers. The first thing you should know is that this promotion works regardless of which American Express credit card your friend is approved for within the family of cards you send a referral for.

You're only able to send referral links for the Amex cards you have, but you could refer a friend to the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card with no annual fee (See Rates), and if choose a different co-branded Delta credit card, you'll still get a referral bonus.

A boon for big spenders?

Referring friends and earning a referral bonus can be lucrative whether you spend a lot on your American Express credit card or not, but this promotion can be especially useful if you happen to charge a lot of purchases to your card each month.

For example, let's say that you refer a friend to the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card. Earning an additional 3 points for each dollar you spend for the next three months could add up to tens of thousands of points, depending on how much you charge to your card during that time.

The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card normally earns 14x points on eligible Hilton purchases, 7x points on flights booked with airlines or through AmexTravel.com, car rentals booked with select agencies and US restaurants, and 3x points on other eligible purchases — but you'd earn an additional 3 points per dollar in each spending category, so up to 17x points (on eligible Hilton purchases). Newly referred friends would also earn 150,000 points after they spend $4,000 on their card within three months of account opening.

The bottom line

If you're looking for a way to earn more rewards points with the American Express credit cards in your wallet, referring friends is an easy way to go about it. You'll earn rewards when people apply for cards using your referral link, and you'll also earn 3x more points for each dollar you spend for the next three months through this limited-time promotion — but remember, you only have until October 28.

With the holiday shopping season on its way, now is an excellent time to focus on boosting the rewards you can earn with your favorite credit card. The Amex "3 for All" promotion can help you do just that, but keep in mind that not all cards are eligible, and that you'll only qualify if you refer friends to the card you have or a card within the same family of cards.
