Amazon scam warning: Britons targeted by fake email – what to look out for

Amazon is used on a daily basis by many households, with an estimated 15 million Britons signed up to its paid subscription service Prime. As the world’s largest online retailer, Amazon provides valuable help for Britons looking to buy a wide range of products for different purposes. But due to the prevalence of its use, fraudsters are always looking for ways to defraud those who use the service.

A new and dangerous scam is circulating in various forms which could prove dangerous if people come into contact with it.

Britons have reported receiving a number of emails which urge them to take action on their Amazon account.

One such email reads: “Dear Customer, we have temporarily locked your account and held all your shopping transactions.

“Our system has detected an illegal transaction, namely billing information that does not match the information on our system with the card issuer.

“To solve this problem, please verify the billing name, address and phone number registered on your payment card.

“If the verification process is not carried out within two days, we will cancel all of your transactions that we hold without exception and you will not be able to access your account as long as this process has not been completed.”

The email even contains an official looking watermark complete with the Amazon logo as well as the official address of the organisation’s headquarters.

And another scam email has told unsuspecting Amazon customers they have accumulated loyalty points, and must act fast in order to secure a prize of a free smartphone.

Both emails are illegitimate correspondence, designed to harvest the data of duped Britons who use the real Amazon.

By clicking the link and inputting personal information, this is likely to be intercepted by fraudsters who are looking for personal and sensitive information.

The consequences, therefore, could be disastrous with Britons standing to potentially lose a significant amount of money.

These types of emails often look very real, and thus people have been urged to take caution.

In fact, several Britons have taken to Twitter to share their experiences with the scam, with some nearly duped.

One wrote: “Watch out for this Amazon Prime email scam, saying your account is on hold.

“They want you to update your bank details, but they will rob you. It isn’t Amazon.”

Another told the Amazon Help page: “I have reported the email to you guys also.

“There does seem to be an ever increasing amount of Amazon scams – many of which are very sophisticated.”

A third said: “Got this email again – designed to steal your Amazon info.

“How do I know it’s a scam? First I do not have an Amazon account. Second, I look at the from address – Amazon not included.

“With the big Amazon sales, I’m sure a lot of these are going out.”

People who receive correspondence are urged to check the mailing address, as well as the spelling and grammar of the messages they receive – as errors are often warning signs of a scam.

Amazon also does not ask customers for sensitive information, so emails of this kind should be promptly deleted.

For those who do believe they have been the victim of a scam, reaching out to their bank, as well as Action Fraud, the national cybercrime reporting service, is always advised.
