Plants can do wonderful things for your health. From spending time in nature, to eating more plants, to dressing up your home with more houseplants: greenery is proven to improve your mental and physical health. If you’d like to add some medicinal and mood-boosting plants to your home, here are five of the best houseplants to start with.

Houseplants add a touch of colour to your home, brightening up whichever space you choose to adorn with a flash of green.

But it’s not just your decor houseplants will refresh, many common potted plants come with additional health benefits for their owners.

In addition, some people find tending to a houseplant gives them a brief moment of pause and mindfulness in their day, which can improve their mood.

These are five of the houseplants with the best health benefits.

1 – Lavender – Improving your sleep

Fragrant lavender is often used to make pillow sprays or scents for the bedroom, as the smell of this plant is thought to help guarantee a good night’s sleep.

Lavenders are renowned for their relaxing scent, so rather than buying lavender fragrances, why not grow one in your bedroom?

A small lavender plant doesn’t need to be watered often, and will be happiest where it can get lots of sunlight.

2 – Snake Plant – Clean your air

Another plant well-suited to your bedroom, the Snake Plant is a powerful air purifier and does most of its work at night.

As you sleep, the Snake Plant can convert carbon dioxide into oxygen.

Snake Plants are also known for removing toxins from the air including trichloroethylene, formaldehyde, toluene, benzene and xylene.

These plants are easy to care for, favouring infrequent watering and indirect sunlight.

3 – English Ivy – Removes mould particles

English Ivy is credited with removing mould particles from the air.

Especially if you suffer with allergies or asthma, English Ivy could help purify the air in your home and alleviate your symptoms.

However while English Ivy has some health benefits, it is also known to be poisonous if eaten by animals or people, so keep it well out of reach of pets or small children.

This plant thrives under artificial fluorescent light rather than direct sunlight.

4 – Rosemary – Boosting memory

If you need help concentrating, look no further than this delicious herb.

Rosemary is often used in cooking, but the plant itself has been shown to improve focus and memory.

This makes it the perfect plant to keep wherever you work from home – and you can snip off cuttings to add to meals. It’s a win-win.

5 – Boston fern – Natural humidifier

The Boston Fern is said to be a natural humidifier, so if the air in your house tends to be dry, this addition could improve your air quality.
