SEISS, or the self-employed income support scheme, has offered some people an essential lifeline through times where they weren’t able to work. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) recently updated its online guidance, offering more information about the latest SEISS grant which is worth up to £7,500. HMRC says: “The online service to claim the fourth grant will be available from late April 2021.” The Revenue service adds: “If you’re eligible based on your tax returns, HMRC will contact you in mid-April and give you a date that you can make your claim from.”

The contact from HMRC should come either in the form of an email or letter within the online Government gateway service.

However, amid the new update HMRC announced a webinar which is aimed at helping the self-employed understand the fourth SEISS grant.

The webinar is also expected to go through how to claim and what happens once the application has been submitted.

HMRC explains: “This webinar takes you through the aim of the scheme, who can apply, how much you may be entitled to, how to claim the fourth grant and what happens after you have claimed.”

There are two live SEISS webinar sessions happening through to the end of April.

The first will be on Friday, April 23 and will last an hour, starting at 1.45pm and ending at 2.45pm.

The second webinar will be the same length of time, and will instead take place from 11.45am to 12.45pm on Tuesday, April 27.

The webinars are free, and to register, all you need is your email address.

Once you register, you will be sent a confirmation email with a link to the webinar along with some guidance on what to expect.

If you’re planning to register for the virtual seminar, HMRC says:

You must register and sign in five minutes before it begins
You can ask questions using the on-screen text box during the webinar

HMRC have also included a warning in the registration email, reading: “This link should not be shared with others; it is unique to you.”

If you want to sign up for HMRC’s SEISS webinar, you can do so here.

As with previous grants, workers wanting to claim SEISS four will need to have been impacted by reduced activity, capacity and demand.

Alternatively, you have to have been previously trading but are temporarily unable to do so due to the pandemic.

How long does SEISS payment take?

HMRC has said that claims for the next self-employed income support grant have to be made on or before June 1, 2021.

HMRC will look at claimants’ trading profits and non-trading income on their Self-Assessment tax returns to see if they can get the cash.

Claims have to be made by affected individuals and not delegated to tax advisors or agents, as this will trigger a fraud alert and your payment will likely be delayed.

Once you have made a successful claim for the SEISS grant, payment should arrive in your bank account within six working days.
