If you leave food cooking or water boiling for too long in a pot or pan, you can totally scorch it. Sometimes if you leave oil or bits of food in your pan for too long, they burn, turn to smoke and leaving sooty deposits on the pan that are hard to remove. Fear not though, as you don’t need to toss these expensive pans away at the site of burnt-on food. reveals five ways to clean a burnt saucepan.

Salt, vinegar and baking soda

You’ll see salt, vinegar and baking soda offered as individual remedies for burnt pans, but all three used together will do the best job.

Sprinkle three tablespoons of salt into the burnt pan or pot and add enough vinegar to cover the bottom of the pan.

Bring the mixture to a boil and once it’s boiling, turn the heat to low and add four tablespoons of baking soda.

As soon as the liquid evaporates, remove the pan from the heat, let it cool down and scrub it with water and a sponge.


Lemons are full of citric acid, making their juice useful for cleaning burnt pots and pans.

Fill the burnt pan or pot with water and slice two or three lemons into quarters.

Place the lemon quarters in the water and bring it to a boil.

Let the lemons boil for about five minutes and then turn off the heat and let the mixture cool.

Remove the lemons and water and start scraping the pan with a wooden spoon or spatula to remove the burnt food.

Wash your pot as you normally would with soapy water.

Dishwasher tablet

You can use a dishwasher tablet and some water to obliterate baked-on grime.

All you have to do is fill up the pan enough to cover the burnt food and then put the pan over low heat for a few minutes.

Then (wearing protective gloves) take the pan off the heat and rub the dishwasher tablet over the burnt bits.

Finally, rinse the pan with fresh water and watch the burnt-on food come away from the pan.

Dryer sheets

Dryer sheets are typically used in the tumble dryer, but they can also be used to remove burnt food from pans.

Fill the pan with enough water to cover the burnt areas and then add some washing up liquid to the pan.

Lay dryer sheets on top of the burnt food and washing up liquid, submerging them into the water.

Let the dryer sheets soak for half an hour or longer and then remove them and tip away the mixture.

Wash the pan as usual and scrub away the burnt remains.


You might have heard about cola’s cleaning properties for rust and shining metal, but did you know the sugary drink can help you to clean burnt pans?

All you have to do is fill up the pan in question with a few inches of cola and let it sit for several hours.

Tip away the cola, and scrape away the burnt food with a wooden spatula.

Make sure you clean the pan with soapy water once you’re done.
