Home interiors are often down to personal taste but sometimes property owners can find themselves being swayed by popular trends. Although some trends can stand the test of time, others can quickly leave interiors looking outdated. Interior experts at Atlas Ceramics have looked at how last year’s trends gained and lost popularity over a six-month period by using Google search data.

The experts looked at how much interest in each trend has changed over the last four years to reveal the most consistent trends.

The study also looked at the most “timeless” interior trends that have had the least variance in six months.

The most timeless trends included mid-century furniture, Moroccan tiles and the more industrial look which includes exposed bricks, pendant lights and brass hardware.

Some of the “shortest lived” trends will be familiar to homeowners, especially if they’ve found themselves adding them to their own interior decor over the last six months.

Female body candles

The shortest lived trend which skyrocketed in popularity last year was “female body candles”.

The trend peaked between November 2020 and April 2021 as more people spent time at home.

Despite its popularity and body-positive message, searches dropped by 79.2 percent in the following six months.

Overall searches for the trend have fluctuated by 444.1 percent.

The experts said “it looks like this trend may already be on its way out”.

Cottagecore

Cottagecore, also known as “farmcore” and “countrycore”, embraces a simple, rural lifestyle with a focus on cottage-style wallpaper, mismatched furniture and rustic furnishings.

The trend was popularised by Instagram and TikTok and first appeared at the end of 2018.

However, the trend peaked from November 2020 to April 2021 but has since become less popular.

Searches have fluctuated by 250 percent from 2017 to October 2021 meaning it may not be as timeless as people think.

Boucle chairs

Boucle seems to become a feature in many homes, either in the form of chairs, cushions or sofas.

Boucle is a fabric that’s made from a series of woven or looped yarn fibres.

The upholstery trend surged from November 2020 to April 2021, reaching 45,800 searches at its peak.

However, searches have varied over time.

Bum vases

This female-form trend increased in popularity thanks to social media platform Instagram.

The trend peaked in popularity with 8,420 searches between November 2020 and April 2021.

However, the trend’s search has already dropped by 119 percent in the last six months.

Twisted candles

Social media made twisted candles a must-have item for many homeowners with thousands of people looking for tutorials on how to create them at home.

Search for the trend didn’t exist between 2017 and 2019 but surged in popularity in November 2020 to April 2021, before dropping again in the following six months.
