Martin Lewis urges consumers to act on ‘great’ American Express deal ending this week

Martin Lewis gives advice on 'autosave' app Chip

Martin Lewis has highlighted that a cashback deal is currently available to American Express holders but it can only be utilised up until December 20. However, the Money Saving Expert warned those taking advantage to ensure they don’t end up paying additional interest.

Martin detailed: “It’s been a tough year for independent shops so here’s a great incentive to support local businesses.

“If you’re a personal American Express credit or charge cardholder, you can get £5 cashback when you spend £10 or more at participating local businesses until Sun December 20 – but you’re restricted to 10 uses, so max £50 back.”

It should be noted corporate and business cardholders are not eligible for this incentive and it cannot be used within large companies, as Martin explained: “It’s valid at thousands of independent small shops, restaurants, cafes, hairdressers etc – but not the big chains.

“What’s more, you’ll be able to get the cashback on top of existing offers.

“It’s in-store only, so purchases made online – even at a participating retailer – won’t work.

“However, it’s not an excuse to overspend, and as it’s a credit card, make sure you pay it off IN FULL each month to avoid interest.”

Reportedly, some shoppers reached out to Martin detailing the offer was not working for them but Amex assured the Money Saving Expert team that the offer is availabel to all personal cardholders (baring certain exemptions).

For those who are not seeing the offer in their app or online account should contact Amex to have the issue fixed.

Martin detailed since these initial reports his team have heard from people who had the issues last week but have now had the offer updated on their accounts.

It should be noted the following Amex cards/accounts are not eligible for the offer:

  • Corporate cards
  • Business travel cards
  • Store cards
  • Prepaid cards

To check on the offer and then make sure it is received consumers should adhere to the following process:

  • Either go to American Express Shop Small, log in, see if the offer’s available and save it to your card; or do it via the ‘Offers’ section of the Amex app
  • So long as the holder is eligible, they should look for participating retailers near them and use their Amex to spend £10+ in a single transaction in store until Sun December 20. Some stores may have limited opening hours due to the coronavirus pandemic, so it’s best to check (this can usually be done by looking at recent social media posts or calling the store) to make sure it’s open.
  • The £5 cashback should then appear as a credit to the card within five working days, but could take as long as 90 days from the offer end date. If the customer has an Amex cashback card, they get their normal level of cashback as well

Additional cardholders must have this offer on their own card via the Amex website or app.

Martin concluded by reminding consumers to be weary of social distance measures which could result in shoppers needing to wait outside if it gets busy.

It was also noted that as different restrictions and tiers come into play different shops and restaurants could close, potentially limiting the offers usage.

This could be particularly problematic for consumers based in London who have just been placed into tier three restrictions.
