Ruth, 56, co-wrote and co-starred in Gavin & Stacey from 2007 to 2010 and again in 2019. She played the role Vanessa Shanessa “Nessa” Jenkins in the series who was the best friend of Stacey. The show followed the lives of title characters Gavin (played by Mathew Horne) and Stacey (played by Joanna Page). Stacey lives in Barry, South Wales with her mum Gwen (Melanie Walters), Uncle Bryn (Rob Brydon) and best friend Nessa.

Meanwhile, Gavin lives in Billericay, Essex with his best fried Neil “Smithy” Smith (James Corden), mum Pam (Alison Stedman) and dad Mick (Larry Lamb).

The show follows the relationship between Gavin and Stacey and the key milestones they encounter in their lives including getting married, moving in together, looking for jobs and trying for children.

Ruth has also appeared in the TV series Fat Friends, Little Britain, Nighty Night, Stella and The Street. She was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Female Comedy Performance and won the BAFTA Cymru Award for Best Screenwriter.

Ruth was born in Bridgend, Glamorgan and has stayed close to her roots living near Cardiff in the hamlet of Pen-y-lan.

Pen-y-lan is a district and community in the east of Cardiff known for its Edwardian period properties and leafy tree-lined roads.

The area is known for being one of the most affluent districts of Cardiff. The area also has a number of large parks which makes it particularly attractive to families.

Ruth lives in a mock-Tudor house bought by her husband David Peet for £325,000 in 2001. David is a TV and radio producer.

The actor and writer met David almost 20 years ago, when they crossed paths on the set of a BBC comedy pilot.

According to Rightmove, properties in Penylan had an overall average price of £332,803 over the last year.

The majority of sales in Penylan during the last year were terraced properties, selling for an average price of £324,545.

Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £364,676, with flats fetching £179,520. Overall, sold prices in Penylan over the last year were nine percent up on the previous year and 21 percent up on the 2018 peak of £275,406.

Ruth has kept her personal life hidden since hitting the big time and rarely appears at celebrity parties.

In fact, Ruth has often said she feels more comfortable jogging around parks in Cardiff and shopping in her local Tesco store.

Last month, Ruth shared whether there was a possibility of another series of Gavin & Stacey on an episode of The One Show.

The BBC comedy was voted one of the top 10 best-loved programmes by BBC viewers after the channel celebrated 100 years of broadcasting.

In response, Ruth said: “It’s such an honour – it really is. And as you know, I’ve been on a book tour, going around the country, I met a 12-year-old the other day who is a massive Gavin and Stacey fan. I told her: ‘you weren’t even born then, when it first came out’ and she said: ‘I know, I love it.’

“So many people have come to tell me, which again is a huge compliment, they watch it on iPlayer and it’s a real comfort show to watch.

“I think it’s because it doesn’t have cynicism and it’s a very loving show. I think that’s perhaps why it is. I feel very honoured to be in that Top 10, that’s a great, great privilege.”

The 2019 Christmas special garnered more than 11 million viewers with fans desperate to find out whether Nessa and Smithy finally got together.

However, Ruth said at the moment there are “no plans” to do anymore. She added: “But James Corden is an absolute joy and I love him like he is my brother, and I love the fact he’s coming back to the UK next year.

“More than anything, I just want to see more of him and if we get to write together, that will be ‘double bubble’ as Gwen would say. But never say never.”
