State pension: ‘Tyrannical’ system forcing 50s women to apply for ‘wholly inadequate’ aid

Women born in the 1950s are at major risk of falling victim to the “tyrannical” system due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a campaigner. 50s women campaigns fight for justice for all women born in the 1950s affected by the changes to the State Pension Age. Joanne Welch, the Founder and Director of the BackTo60 group which represents some of those affected, spoke to about whether the state pension was enough.

Ms Welch said: “The point is, 50s women don’t have their pension so how can it be enough?

“For instance, some women are having to wait up to six years to get their pension.

“So amid this pandemic some of them are forced to work and others are struggling on benefits which are wholly inadequate.

“It’s an absolute tyrannical system and they’re forced to apply for benefits when they planned for their retirement.”

She continued: “Yet they don’t have the earned dues to which they’re entitled.

“The question ‘is the state pension enough’, I think that’s a question for people other than 50s women.

“50s women would very much like their pension.

“Boris Johnson did say he was going to help us, but that promise never came to fruition.”

During the July 2019 Conservative Party Leadership contest, Boris Johnson announced that he would work to find a way to help the affected women.

He said: “The Treasury raise some stupefying sum that they say will be necessary to deal with it. I’m not convinced that’s necessarily true. Let’s see what we can do.

“I will undertake – if I’m lucky enough to succeed in this campaign – to return to this issue with fresh vigour and new eyes and see what I can do to sort it out. Because I’m conscious it’s been going on for too long.”

However during the general election, he said: “The WASPI issue as everyone knows is a very difficult problem caused by a change in the pension age for women who retired at a certain age.

“And we have looked at it and looked at it and looked at it. I would love to be able to magic you a solution. It is very expensive to come up with the solution that you want.

“And I’m going to be honest with you tonight. I cannot promise that I can magic up that money for you tonight.”
