Warm Home Discount: How to apply for £140 Warm Home Discount scheme

We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.

The Warm Home Discount Scheme (WHDS) offers a one-off payment of £140 towards your energy bill. The WHDS, which was introduced in April 2011, reduces the winter bills of those who need it most in England, Wales and Scotland.

How to apply for the Warm Home Discount Scheme

There are two groups which are eligible for the WHDS.

Eligible households are separated into the “core group” and the “broader group”.

Those in the “core group” get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit.

To qualify for Warm Home Discount under the “core group” you must meet the following requirements on a specific date, July 5, 2020:

  • your energy supplier is part of the scheme
  • your name (or your partner’s) is on the bill
  • you are getting the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (even if you get Savings Credit as well)

The “broader group” category are for those on low income and who meet their energy suppliers’ criteria for the scheme.

How you apply for the WHDS depends on how you qualify for the discount.

If you think you are eligible for the “core group” and have not received a letter from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) by December, phone the Warm Home Discount Scheme helpline on 0800 731 0214 to check.

This should be done as soon as possible, as the DWP may be unable to process a claim where information is given late.

Your letter will say if you need to call a helpline by February 26, 2021 to confirm your details.

Your electricity supplier will apply the discount to your bill by March 31, 2021.

The “broader group” is not automatic and requires you to apply directly to your supplier.

Different suppliers may have different criteria, so you should contact your supplier to ask what you need to do.

Most suppliers open applications for the broader group over summer and fill places on a first come, first served basis.

The discount will not affect your Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment.
